How to create a Government Gateway Account

Updated: Apr 24

Government gateway accounts prove to be really useful tools, connecting directly to HMRC to provide real-time updates on your tax standings. A personal account enables you to review personal tax codes, tax credits, self-assessment details, and child benefits, while business accounts grant access to PAYE, Corporation Tax, and VAT records. Creating these accounts can be confusing, so we've made a step-by-step guide to help you set one up!

2- On the website, click 'create sign-in details'.

3- Enter your email address, then click 'continue'.

4- You will then be asked to enter a code to confirm your email address. This will have been emailed to the address you entered in the previous step. Once you have entered the code, click 'Confirm'.

5- You will then be asked to fill in your full name. This applies to both business and

personal accounts being set up. Once entered, click 'continue'.

6- Create a password that meets the requirements, then click 'continue'.

7- You will then be given your Government Gateway User ID, which you will need to log in to your account. This will also be emailed to the same address you used in step 3.

8- Choose the account type. If you are setting up a personal tax account, you must select 'individual', whereas businesses would select 'organisation'.

To continue setting up a business account:

9- Click 'get online access to tax, duty, or scheme' and set up the desired taxes using your business information.

To continue setting up a personal account:

9- Select how you would like to receive access codes. When you log in to your government gateway, it will ask you to confirm your identity by entering a code. How you receive this code, will depend on your answer to this question. Once selected, you will be asked to set this up by entering your email, phone number or using an app.

10- In this section, you will be asked questions to prove your identity, which requires either your passport, P60, or tax credits info. Click 'continue', then on the next page fill out your name, date of birth, and National Insurance number.

11- You will be prompted to choose 2 items to be asked about- either your passport, payslip/p60, or credit references. Once these have been chosen, you will be asked questions on these to confirm your identity.

12- Once your identity is confirmed, you can then log in to your gateway using the same website linked above. Once you are logged in, you can view your PAYE, Self Assessment, and National Insurance details.

And... that's it!

We hope this has helped you set up and access your government gateway account. If you have any questions though, do not hesitate to get in touch!
